Chain Reaction: Youth Bike Workshop in Cheadle

On Saturday morning, Tean Road Rec in Cheadle buzzed with excitement as a collaborative effort brought together the local women’s refuge, Move More Staffs Moorlands, Cheadle Town Council, Moorlands Climate Action (MCA), and the County Council’s Waste Minimisation Officer for a basic bike maintenance and repair session.
Several young people from the refuge, eager to own a bike and learn new skills, attended the session. Volunteers from MCA guided them through the process of basic bike maintenance and repair. Each participant selected a bike, sourced from local recycling centre by Gemma Wall and her team (Staffordshire County Council Waste), to work on during the workshop.
The workshop aimed to provide reclaimed bikes to those in need, promoting cycling for better physical and mental health. Participants gained valuable knowledge in bike maintenance and repair, skills they can use in the future.
Gemma played a crucial role, not only sourcing and delivering the bikes but also providing helmets and lights for the session. One participant, who had never ridden a bike before, was seen confidently cycling around the rec by the end of the workshop, thanks to the support of MCA volunteers, Dave and Dan. In total, seven children and young people from the refuge received their own bikes for free. A big thank you to Cheadle Town Council who set up a gazebo for the event and provided refreshments, generously donated by Morrisons supermarket.
The event was a testament to the power of community collaboration, successfully addressing local health inequalities and promoting positive environmental practices.
